What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session
By Healing Steps Counseling
EMDR can sound unusual if you’ve only heard the phrase “eye movements.” In practice, it’s structured, collaborative, and paced to your comfort. Here’s what the beginning usually looks like.
It starts with safety, not memories
You won’t dive into your worst memory on day one. The first sessions focus on history, goals, and building coping resources — like a calm-place exercise — so you have tools to steady yourself before any reprocessing begins.
How reprocessing feels
When you’re ready, your therapist guides brief sets of bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones) while you briefly hold a memory. You stay present and in control the whole time; you can pause whenever you need. Most people notice the memory gradually feels less charged.
You’re in the driver’s seat
EMDR is not hypnosis, and you won’t lose awareness. You decide the pace, and a good EMDR therapist checks in constantly. Healing happens in a window where you feel challenged but not overwhelmed.
