How CBT Helps With Anxiety and Depression
By Healing Steps Counseling
CBT is one of the most studied, effective therapies for anxiety and depression — and it’s more practical than mysterious. At its heart is a simple idea: thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected, and changing one shifts the others.
Catching the thoughts that fuel the feeling
Anxiety and depression run on automatic thoughts — “I’ll embarrass myself,” “nothing will change,” “it’s all my fault.” CBT helps you notice these in real time and examine whether they’re actually true, rather than treating them as facts.
Small experiments, real change
CBT is active. Between sessions you might track thoughts, test a feared prediction, or gradually re-enter something you’ve been avoiding. These small experiments retrain your brain far faster than insight alone.
What CBT is not
CBT isn’t “just think positive.” It’s not about forcing cheerfulness or ignoring real problems. It’s a structured, collaborative way to build skills you keep for life.
