The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique to Calm Anxiety
By Healing Steps Counseling
When anxiety spikes, your mind races into the future. Grounding brings you back to right now. The 5-4-3-2-1 technique uses your five senses to interrupt the spiral — and you can do it anywhere.
How to do it
Slowly notice, out loud or in your head:
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can feel
- 3 things you can hear
- 2 things you can smell
- 1 thing you can taste
Why it works
Naming sensory details engages the thinking part of your brain and signals to your nervous system that you’re safe in this moment. With practice, it gets faster and more effective.
