Grief and Loss: There’s No Timeline
By Healing Steps Counseling
If you’ve been told grief has five tidy stages that end when you “move on,” you may feel like you’re doing it wrong. You’re not. Grief is far messier, more personal, and less linear than that — and there’s no deadline.
Grief isn’t a straight line
The famous “stages” were never meant as a checklist. Real grief loops and circles — waves of sadness, numbness, anger, and even moments of peace, in no fixed order. A hard day months later doesn’t mean you’ve regressed; it means you loved something.
It’s not only death
We grieve many losses — a relationship, a role, a pregnancy, a version of the future we expected, a move, or a health change. All of these are worthy of grief and support, even when the world doesn’t treat them that way.
Carrying it, together
Grief isn’t something to “get over” so much as learn to carry. Therapy offers a space to feel what you feel without being rushed, to honor what you lost, and to slowly find your footing again — at your own pace.
