Does Insurance Cover Therapy in Utah?
By Healing Steps Counseling
One of the most common reasons people delay therapy is cost — and much of that worry comes from not knowing what’s covered. The good news: most major Utah plans include mental-health benefits. Here’s how to find out where you stand.
Most plans include mental health
Under current law, most insurance plans must cover mental-health care similarly to physical health. Many Utah families are covered for therapy through plans like SelectHealth, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, PEHP, and Medicaid — though specifics vary by plan.
Questions to ask your insurer
A quick call to the number on your card clears up most of it. Ask:
- Do I have outpatient mental-health / therapy benefits?
- Is this provider in-network?
- What’s my copay, coinsurance, or deductible?
- Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
If you’re not covered
If therapy isn’t covered or you prefer self-pay, ask about self-pay rates and superbills (which you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement). We’re happy to help you understand your options — cost shouldn’t be the reason you go without support.
