Depression vs. Ordinary Sadness: How to Tell the Difference
By Healing Steps Counseling
Everyone feels down sometimes. Depression is different — it lingers, flattens the things you used to enjoy, and doesn’t lift when circumstances improve. Here’s how to tell them apart.
Sadness has a reason and an end
Ordinary sadness is usually tied to something — a loss, a stressor, a disappointment — and it eases with time, comfort, and support. You can still feel moments of joy in between.
Depression settles in and stays
Depression tends to last two weeks or longer and shows up across your whole life, even when things are objectively okay.
- Low or numb mood most of the day, most days
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
- Trouble concentrating or feeling worthless
- Hopelessness that doesn’t budge
When to reach out
If several of these have stuck around for a couple of weeks, that’s a good reason to talk to someone — not because you’re broken, but because depression responds well to support. If you’re having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 any time, day or night.
